Don your favorite cocktail attire for the Houston Heights Association’s annual Holiday Party - Martinis & Mistletoe - to be held on Friday, December 5, from 7:00 to 10:00 PM at 205 Bayland Avenue in Woodland Heights. Tickets are $100, and the event is open to advance ticket holders only. The maximum number of tickets to be sold will be 150, so please get your tickets early.
Guests will be treated to live music, gourmet hors d’oeuvres and desserts, wine, beer, and of course, delicious martinis.
205 Bayland was designed and built in 1910 by William A. Wilson, founder of the Woodland Heights, to serve as his own home. On a brisk winter’s eve, the 2,000-square-foot wrap-around porch and grand open interior spaces are perfect for cocktails and conversation. The entire home will be open to guests for this event.
This party and fundraiser will be a great opportunity to get to know your neighbors, visit with old friends, and make new ones as you kick off the holiday season. We hope you can join everyone on December 5 for Martinis & Mistletoe!

Did you know the Houston Heights Association owns and maintains the Houston Heights City Hall & Fire Station, Donovan Park (the playground), and Marmion Park & Gazebo? The HHA, with its many volunteers, also beautifies and maintains Heights Boulevard’s esplanade and its jogging trails, benches, gazebos, water fountains, trees, and gardens for everyone to enjoy.
About the 2014 Holiday Open House
The Board of Directors of the Houston Heights Association (HHA) has considered for several years whether or not to have two home tours each year. The difficulties of any home tour include identifying the homes and willing homeowners, the large number of volunteers, and the crowded holiday season. For 2014, our winter fundraiser will be a holiday party. Although not as grandiose as a home tour, the holiday party is a great way to meet members of the Association and celebrate the season. We are planning for a holiday home tour in 2015; however, we are also exploring alternative fundraisers for the winter season.
The HHA is a volunteer organization that is involved in many community activities: boulevard beautification, education, constable patrol program, land use, and more. In addition to these and other standing committees, the Association generally has four fundraising events each year, all of which require a great many volunteers. We greatly appreciate the time and energy contributed by our volunteers and strive to utilize their time as efficiently as possible.
Spread Some Cheer: Help With Holiday Food Baskets
The Heights Rotary Club and the Houston Heights Association annually underwrite, prepare, and distribute food baskets to local families in need. These families are chosen by area charities. You can help assemble and distribute the goodies on December 16 and 17.
One hundred baskets (actually sets of six bags) will be assembled on the first floor of the Fire Station (12th & Yale) on the evening of Tuesday, December 16, starting at 5:00 PM. Volunteers will be sorting bulk groceries among the baskets for about two hours; come by whenever you can. This is a great opportunity for the entire family to give back to the community.
Delivery starts after lunch (approximately 11:30 AM) on Wednesday, December 17. Come by the Fire Station to pick up a set of bags and the name and address of a family to receive them; if you have a large car or van, pick up several! Delivery should be completed that afternoon. If you are interested in lunch, plates are available for $10 (cash only) beginning at 11:00 AM. Typically, delivering three baskets (to three families) takes an hour to an hour and a half.
This is a great way for the whole family to volunteer some time to a very worthy cause. Previous participants can assure you, the smile and sometimes joyous tears on the recipients’ faces makes the true meaning of this holiday season truly memorable.

Monthly Meeting & Happy Hour
Join us on the second Monday of every month to meet neighbors, hear interesting programs, and learn about events. Doors open to the Fire Station at 6:30 PM for happy hour, with the monthly program commencing at 7:00 PM. Everyone is invited!
November 10: Annual Business Member Showcase
Come meet HHA Business Members showcasing their services and wares. It’s a great way to meet new friends and familiarize yourself with some of the businesses that help make living in the Heights great. Join us for a mix and mingle evening. Plus, you might be a winner in the door prize raffle!
December 8: Holiday Celebration
Annual free holiday party for HHA members and guests. Merriment, music, and maybe a little mayhem.
Heights Garden Club
The Garden Club will have two meetings in November. The regular 10:00 AM, second Saturday meeting on the 8th will be held at the home of Duston Mason at 125 E. 2nd St.
He will speak to us about incorporating native plants into our garden for the purpose of contributing to a healthier ecology and demonstrate with his roof top garden how even a limited space can accommodate natives. Duston says that he uses an approach described in the book Insects and Garden: In Pursuit of a Garden Ecology and will share many insights gained about container gardening since moving into his current home.
On November 12, the Garden Club will be hosting a Harvest Potluck & Meet and Greet at Heights Fire Station beginning at 7:00 PM. Please bring a vegetable dish (from your garden, if possible) or dessert to share. Turkey, brisket, beer, wine, and water will be provided. We will also have a short talk about winter garden protection. There will be door prizes!

Community Improvement Awards
Change is everywhere this year - in our community and in our Community Improvement Awards process!
Ahhh, Fall! It’s that time of year when we pull our heads out of the air-conditioning and take a walk, or a bike ride, or just roll down the car windows and cruise. All the better to notice what’s going on in the neighborhood: what’s changed, what’s new, and what makes Houston Heights an even better place than before.
In the next two months, the HHA will be accepting nominations for the 2014 Community Improvement Awards. The Nomination Form is in the hardcopy edition of this newsletter and on the HHA website. (Click ). Nominations must be received by January 9, 2015.
This year, the Community Improvement Awards Chair (aka: me) has decided to do something a little different with respect to the Awards program. As our neighborhood has grown and prospered each year, we have received more and more CIA nominations. In the past, we have included every nomination in the slide show presentation at the HHA Volunteer Appreciation and Awards Dinner in February.
In order to keep our HHA Community Improvement Awards program from becoming, like the Oscars, interminable, this year we will select “Finalists” from the pool of nominees. Finalists will be selected based on the Nomination Form and photographs submitted. Therefore, it is more important than ever that Nomination Forms be complete and include “before” and “after” photographs. Reminder: the judges can only consider exterior improvements!
The Eligibility and Judging Criteria remain the same. The judges will personally view all the Finalist properties, and the Winners will be selected from these Finalists. The slide show will present the Finalists and the Winners, rather than every nomination received.
As always, we encourage you to nominate that special home or business that was recently renovated or constructed here in the Heights, the one that makes you slow down and say, “Now that’s a nice change!” Then you can go back to griping about the traffic. ;-)
Director Election Schedule
Seven of the fifteen positions on the HHA Board of Directors will be filled by election over the next few months. Five of the positions are opening due to normal expiration of terms, two by early termination of terms. Only five candidates were nominated at the September General Meeting and have consented to serve, but we are proceeding with the election. These five nominees will serve three-year terms; the two one-year terms will be filled by the 2015 Board at its Organizational Meeting. The ballot will provide a space to indicate if you wish to be considered for one of these positions.
The remaining schedule for the election of Directors to serve terms starting in 2015 will be as follows, in accordance with the By-Laws and Policies of the Association.
• Ballots must be received by November 8, at the close of the U. S. Post Office.
• November 10, before the General Meeting, polls will be open for secret balloting in person from 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM sharp. The Election Committee will tabulate ballots and announce the results during the meeting. The results will also be published in the December newsletter.
Bicycle Rally Wrap-Up
Sunday, October 5 turned out to be a beautiful day for a bicycle ride and scavenger hunt for both adults and children. There are so many to thank, so here goes:

Help Wanted: Newsletter Team
The team that prepares your monthly newsletter in its various editions is looking for people to fill any or all of the following positions:
Web Layout Specialist
Create the HTML edition using supplied templates, articles, and photographs under the direction of the Editor. Requires skill with Adobe Dreamweaver, Adobe InDesign, or similar program.
Gather articles from other HHA committees, edit them into standard formats, and crosscheck stories for consistency under the direction of the Editor. Requires use of Microsoft Word.
Cover HHA events, taking pictures and/or writing stories as assigned by the Editor.
Supervise and coordinate the team members listed above; coordinate with HHA Officers, Committee Chairs, contractors, and volunteers as necessary; coordinate with printer/mailer to produce print edition; coordinate with Webmaster to publish PDF and HTML editions; handle inquiries and submissions from members and readers.

Fire Station Commemorative Bricks
The final phase of the Fire Station renovation included adding a brick courtyard to enhance the 12th Street entrance to the historic structure. Here’s your opportunity to create a lasting tribute to your loved ones, whether two- or four-legged.

Engraving on the bricks will take place in January and February 2015, before the 100th anniversary celebration of the Fire Station dedication on Sunday, March 15, 2015.

November is a “Tree Waste Only” month; December is a “Junk Waste” month. The heavy trash pickup date is the third Wednesday for most of the HHA coverage area.
