Heights Fun Run Is Almost Here!
Runners, it’s not too late to lace your shoes and stretch your running and philanthropic muscles by registering for one of Houston’s most popular small runs - the Houston Heights Association’s 29th Heights Fun Run - to be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014. The fast out-and-back 5K course follows the beautifully scenic and historic Heights Boulevard. The race, which includes a 5K Fun Run, a 5K Walk, and a Kids’ 1K, starts and ends at Marmion Park located at 1820 Heights Blvd.
Run Wild Sports Timing will conduct the disposable-chip timing for the certified 5K course.
The 5K Fun Run starts at 7:30 AM, the 5K Walk starts at 7:35 AM, and the Kids’ 1K starts at 8:30 AM. Each kid participating in the 1K will receive an award, and each Fun Run entrant will receive a commemorative 100%-cotton Fun Run t-shirt.
The Post-Race Party begins at 8:00 AM at Marmion Park, with the awards ceremony scheduled for 9:00 AM. In addition to entertainment and door prizes, refreshments including tacos, fresh fruit, bagels, water, coffee, and more will be available.
Runners may register online through 8:00 PM on June 6. (Click .) Registration is also available at Luke’s Locker on June 5-6 or at Marmion Park on race day.
The fee for the Fun Run and Walk is $25 through June 3, and $30 June 4 and after. The Kids’ 1K fee is $15 through June 3, and $20 on June 4 and after. Credit cards are accepted.
Packets may be picked up from Luke’s Locker at 1953 West Gray on June 5-6, and will also be available from 6:15 AM to 7:15 AM on race day at Marmion Park (18th Street and Heights Boulevard).

Finding True North
It’s so exciting to drive, walk, or bicycle along the Heights Boulevard esplanade thanks to the efforts of long-time Heights resident Gus Kopriva of Redbud Gallery and Chris Silkwood, a local artist and community activist. Due in large part to the efforts of these two - along with the approval from the City of Houston’s Parks and Public Works departments and a grant received from the Houston Arts Alliance - there are now eight fabulous sculptures on exhibit from the 400 to the 1800 blocks of Heights Boulevard.
The exhibit will be up until the first week of November 2014, so there is lots of time to enjoy it. The comments have been incredible, with many expounding on their favorite piece, and the smiles have been broad.
Make plans now to attend the July 14 HHA Monthly Meeting & Happy Hour, when you’ll have a chance to meet the curators as well as the featured artists of the popular artworks. Everyone is invited to learn about the amazing art and the process to make it happen on the centerpiece of our neighborhood.
Any questions about the project should be directed to Gus at his gallery or at the July meeting.
We welcome these members to the Houston Heights Association.
