Heights Fun Run

Runners take your marks for one of Houston’s most popular small runs - the Houston Heights Association’s 29th Annual Heights Fun Run, to be held on Saturday, June 7, 2014. The fast out-and-back 5K course runs along the beautifully scenic and historic Heights Boulevard. The race starts and ends at Marmion Park and includes a 5K Fun Run, a 5K Walk, and a Kids 1K.

Run Wild Sports Timing will conduct the disposable-chip timing for the certified 5K course.

The 5K Fun Run starts at 7:30 AM, the 5K Walk starts at 7:35 AM, and the Kids 1K starts at 8:30 AM. Each kid participating in the 1K will receive an award, and each entrant will receive a commemorative 100 percent cotton T-shirt.

The Post-Race Party will begin at 8:00 AM at Marmion Park, with the awards ceremony scheduled for 9:00 AM. In addition to entertainment and door prizes, refreshments including tacos, fresh fruit, bagels, water, coffee, and more will be available.

Online registration is open and will last through 8:00 PM on June 6. Registration is also available at Luke’s Locker on June 5-6 or at Marmion Park on race day. The fee for the Fun Run and Walk is $25 through June 3, and $30 on June 4 and after. The Kids 1K fee is $15 through June 3, and $20 on June 4 and after. Credit cards are accepted. Packets may be picked up from Luke’s Locker at 1953 West Gray on June 5-6 and will be available from 6:15 to 7:15 AM on race day at Marmion Park located at 18th Street and Heights Boulevard.

For more information, call the Houston Heights Association at 713-861-4002, ext. 4, or email funrun@houstonheights.org.

Our next meeting will be held on Saturday, May 10 at 10:00 AM at the grand old Victorian at 1802 Harvard, the home of long-time Heights resident Bart Truxillo. Spring is the bloom season for this quintessential old Southern perennial garden overflowing with pass-a-long plants. Over the past 30 years, this historic home and garden has been featured in many local and national publications. In the back, Bart keeps half-a-dozen red hens. Next door, Bart graciously hosts the Harvard Street Cooperative Garden.

Our June meeting will be on the 14th at 10:00 AM. We will be visiting the Lyke/Killinger home at 1648 Columbia. Come and see how beautiful a no turf, native plant garden can be.

Please check our Facebook page or our website at www.heightsgardenclub.com for information about upcoming meetings and workdays.

Urbanites

That’s a Wrap!

It always happens about this time of year. The chair(s) of the Spring Home & Garden Tour have just about forgotten the last minute scrambles that took place to ensure that all the final details concerning the weekend’s events were taken into consideration. By now, the six ladies who formed the 2014 Spring Home & Garden Tour executive committee are all smiles and thinking about the new neighborhood friends they made while planning and executing “The Art of Colorful Living.”

Sandy Steitz, who chaired the home and garden tour, can now laugh when she thinks about the street closure and rain that threatened to keep people away. Instead she remembers the homeowners who graciously opened their front doors for the tour. She remembers the head docents who quieted the homeowners’ last-minute jitters. She remembers the smell of all the beautiful floral arrangements that filled the homes. How can she forget the businesses that sold tickets before and during the tour or the folks who made sure all the signs were in place, the buses where running on time, and the bicycle racks were in place?

Julie Pettit, chair of the silent auction, Linda Eyles and Danae Stephenson, co-chairs of the live auction, and Donna Bennett and Stacey Courville, co-chairs of the Friday night dinner, also have reasons to celebrate. More than 425 guests enjoyed the garden-themed event - complete with living statues.

Attendees to the gala entered by passing between two front porches, browsed the silent auction surrounded by green hedge walls, sipped on colorful Spring Fling cocktails, dined on the delicious dinner prepared by Massoud Catering, and enjoyed the excitement of live auction bidding!

You can relive the evening, see if your picture was snapped, and download photos for free by going to www.pbyd.com, clicking Proofs, then on Commercial Proofs, and on Houston Heights Association (or just click here). Photos will be online through May 31, 2014.

For a list of people and businesses that the chairs of the 2014 Spring Home & Garden Tour wish to thank, please go to www.houstonheights.org/html/spring_tour.html.

The only person not smiling at this point might be Janet Buchheit, Vice President of Fundraising for HHA, who has the job of replacing the 2014 “mix of six” executive chairs (Danae, Donna, Julie, Linda, Sandy, and Stacey) with people to start the planning process for the 2015 event.
